Vermeer's Skopos Theory: A Deep Dive
Hans Vermeer's primary contribution was to relocate the centre of translation decisions from the source to the purpose (Greek skopos) of the target text. The shift sounds modest; its implications are radical.
Three rules
- Skopos rule: the end justifies the means.
- Coherence rule: the target text must be internally coherent for its readers.
- Fidelity rule: the target text must bear some demonstrable relation to the source.
What this dethrones
Vermeer dethroned the source text as the sole criterion of translation success. Two different purposes legitimately produce two different translations of the same source. AI pipelines that omit the purpose collapse this to a single house default and pretend the question never arose.
